Japan grass - grassy ornamental with a beautiful shape and distant charm
As Perennial of the Year 2022, Japan mountain grass makes quite an impression. The ornamental grass with the botanical name Hakonechloa macra forms beautiful bolls that hang over attractively. The colouring of the leaves develops throughout the year and promises you a varied sight. All in all, this Japanese grass has many of the qualities you want in an ornamental grass.
Leafage and colour characteristics of Japanese grass
Hakonechloa macra grows with its leaves between 30 and 40 centimetres long. The foliage grows grass-like and does not grow too tall. The green colour of the foliage sets bright accents. This is a summer-green plant. This means that the foliage is not retained during the winter. However, you can expect a beautiful autumn colour with this ornamental grass. The leaves first turn yellow and then darker towards brown. Japanese forest grass flowers in a golden yellow colour from August to October. After flowering, nutty fruits develop on the plant.
Hakonechloa macra grows in sunny or partial shade
This ornamental grass is suitable for planting in sunny locations as well as partial shade. Both are suitable for Japanese mountain grass as a location. This gives you flexibility when planting. The plant grows best in a humus-rich soil with sufficient moisture. The beautiful bolls of the ornamental grass look good in the garden, but Japanese woodland grass can also be planted freely. Japanese forest grass is used as a ground cover, as well as for hedging or edging paths. In this way, you can create targeted paths through your garden area.
Hakonechloa macra has different varieties
Hakonechloa macra is known as Japanese forest grass or Japanese mountain grass. This ornamental grass cuts a fine figure in a Japanese garden. Due to the lush green of the leaves, Japanese mountain grass is also a very suitable addition to rock gardens. You can also use this ornamental grass to separate individual garden areas from each other or to enhance a terrace with Japanese mountain grass. Beautiful calming effects are achieved when Japanese mountain grass is combined with heuchera or ferns
Hakonechloa macra does not grow too tall. This way, Japanese mountain grass makes a neat impression even without pruning.
