Pennisetum alopecuroides 'Hameln'
Pennisetum alopecuroides "Hameln", or "lampbush grass" is a particularly popular summer-green grass species with a round, compact, bushy growth habit. The leaves are narrow linear, greyish-green, curved and üoverhanging, taking on a golden yellow colour in autumn. Pennisetum alopecuroides 'Hameln' flowers from July to October with yellow-brown ¨hairs that turn golden yellow later in the autumn.
What is low lampbane grass suitable for?
It is a beautiful ornamental grass for the mixed border, the gravel garden, the prairie garden or can also be used as a pot plant. Nice to combine with other ornamental grasses or as a calm element in a flower garden. You can cut the feathers of Pennisetum and use them as cut flowers, but if you put the feathers in water, the life span is very short. If you dry the feathers after cutting, you can enjoy them for longer. You will also see them more and more in dry flower strands!
Pennisetum alopecuroides'Hamelin' in the garden
This grass loves a spot in full sun or partial shade and a well-drained to sandy soil. This Pennisetum is hardy to about -20 degrees and drought tolerant, tolerating sea breezes well. In winter the long blades die back above ground, and in spring new blades of grass emerge from the roots. The dead stems of Pennisetum alopecuroides Hameln remain upright in winter. They are then still very decorative, especially with a layer of ripeness or snow. Therefore, do not prune the grass until spring, when the first new branches appear. Another reason to cut ornamental grasses in spring is that in winter rainwater remains in the cut stems, which can cause pollen to rot.
