Imperata Red Baro
Japanese blood grass
Ornamental grasses come in all possible varieties and surprising colours. Imperata 'Red Baron' is a very special and striking ornamental grass. It provides a fresh look in your garden and with its changing colours is as interesting as many other garden plants.
What is blood grass suitable for?
Japanese Blood Grass Red Baron is a decorative hardy garden plant. The grass grows loosely upright about 40cm high, the leaves of the plant show an intense red colour, especially in summer. The grass-like leaves appear in late spring, are initially green and red at the tips. The beautiful colourful culms compensate for the lack of flowers, as this garden plant rarely flowers in Europe. This blood grass is well drought tolerant, quite hardy, tolerates sea breezes and is a special accent plant for use as a border planting.
Red Baron Grass in the Garden
Red Baron Grass likes sunny but also semi-shady places, the more sun, the bolder the flowers. This garden plant prefers a normal, well-drained soil. The young plants of Japanese blood grass are moderately hardy; protect them from frost with a layer of foliage. In spring, the grass, which is not always green, is cut back completely. It is advisable to fertilise the Imperata Red Baron twice a year, in spring and summer. Do this with organic fertiliser. It is important that you moisten the plant well afterwards so that the fertiliser sinks to the roots. Imperata Red Baron combines well with other ornamental grasses.
