Punica granatum 'Nana' on trunk (Dwarf Pomegranate) - This is a semi-evergreen to evergreen dwarf shrub that is an ornamental form of the prolific pomegranate. Its slender stems hold attractive, glossy green, long leaves and dark orange-red flowers in profusion at the branch tips during summer, followed by broad, red ornamental fruits that remain on the plant through winter. These fruits are technically edible, but a little too acidic to really be considered tasty, so they are best left on the plant to be viewed.
Punica granatum are often used as a small single specimen or as a pot plant - it is excellent for bonsai and the flowers are attractive to bees and butterflies. This variety on a stem is a great eye-catcher in any garden and is also a popular gift for a garden party.
You can keep the dwarf pomegranate in the garden, but it will also cheer up your garden when planted. As this plant is container grown it can be planted all year round.
