The &year-old splendid perennial is a decorative perennial with purple flower stalks!
The ¨hrige Prachtscharte presents itself from July to September from its most beautiful side with around 20 centimetres long flower stalks. These are hare-like and consist of many flower heads in a striking violet/purple colour. The botanical name of the plant is Liatris Spicata. It belongs to the composite family and is originally native to North America. As an ornamental plant it decorates flower borders, flower beds, parks, meadows or the prairie garden. Liatris spicata is also a feast for the eyes as a cut flower in the vase or in flower arrangements.
The towering flower stems are flown to by bees, bumblebees and butterflies throughout the summer. This means that the perennial also has an important ecological benefit. When you buy a beauty chart, you will not only enjoy the sight of it, but you will also be making a valuable contribution to saving bees.
Location and growth of the orchid
The hardy orchid loves a sunny location. It does best in a fresh, slightly loamy and well-drained soil. Liatris Spicata grows upright and reaches a height of 30 to 50 centimetres. It grows horstically and is deciduous. The foliage is alternate on the stems. They are dark green and narrow to linear in shape. The leaves are pointed at the front and have entire margins. In autumn they turn red. The lower leaves form a grass-like mop. The special thing about the orchid is that the flower stalks blossom from the top downwards.
The magnificent card looks best in a group of plants. Then the impressive plant unfolds all its charm. The purple flowers attract all eyes and their long-distance effect is phenomenal. There are eight to twelve Liatris per square metre. Because of its size, Liatris Spicata should be planted in the back of the bed, giving priority to smaller flowering plants. This summer perennial also looks beautiful in open spaces. If you would like to combine the Prachtscharte, you have many fantastic options. The perennial looks wonderful next to phlox, coneflower or sunflower. It also forms enchanting bedding partnerships with ornamental grasses
Care of the Liatris
Cut back the faded flower stalks in late summer to the tallest stem leaves so that the liatris does not spread. In autumn, prune down to ground level. Liatris is an enrichment for every garden or front garden. The magnificent perennial is hardy. It is classified in winter hardiness zone Z3. This means that it can cope with temperatures from -35 to -39°C without any problems. You can plant the Magnificent Orchard all year round on frost-free days.
