Indian nettle red as a highlight for the garden
With the Monarda red, as the Indian nettle is called in the plant world, every garden friend and their observer has a beautiful summer-green perennial in the garden that delights everyone with its red flowers. The lanceolate, deep-green leaves of the Monarda red give the red flowers an even more intense red colour. The wonderful red flowers bloom from July to September and are therefore an attractive highlight in the garden during the summer months. The Monarda red is not only beautiful to look at in the garden, but is also suitable as a cut plant in beautiful vases on the tables at home because of its long life.
The best location in the garden for red monarda
The perennial Indian nettle red loves the sun, although it also thrives in partial shade, but it does not flower as intensively here as in a nice sunny location. It is particularly suitable for planting in scented gardens because of its fragrant scent, which the Monarda's foliage gives off in red. In the past, the Indians used to make a tea from the aromatic foliage of this beautiful shrub. As this beautiful flowering garden plant is very pleasant, it can be planted in any sunny spot in the garden. However, the soil should be moderately fertile, rich in humus, moist but well drained. The deciduous perennial is hardy and shines again every year in its splendid beauty. In a group planting with the Campanula carpatica Blue Clips or the Salvia nemorosa, the Monarda red becomes a real eye-catcher.
A true paradise for insects is the red Indian nettle
Native insects such as bumblebees, bees and butterflies are really attracted to the sweet nectar of the monarda. However, many other stinging insects are deterred by the Indian nettle. For this reason, the Monarda red is also often planted as a pot plant on the terrace, as a natural enemy against stinging insects. If planted in a container, it should be noted that the plant can reach a height of one metre. With a width of about 60cm, the perennial is an imposing appearance, which is made even more impressive by the red colour of the flowers.
For a bed planting, we recommend 3 – 5 plants per square metre.
Our plants are grown in pots and can be planted all year round.
