Blue Chinese Plumbago - Ceratostigma plumbaginoides
Ceratostigma is a good, dense summer-green ground cover. Its height of 6 – 10 cm is rather low, but it spreads quickly and can quickly fill larger areas. The blue flowers of the plumbago, which bloom in late summer to mid-autumn, provide a beautiful contrast to the reddish stems and the green foliage. In the autumn, the leadwort's foliage also changes to spectacular red before it falls.
What is Chinese plumbago suitable for
It is ideal for use as a ground cover in sunny or shady places. It looks particularly nice as a border along a path or walkway or as an underplanting for Bäume such as Japanese maples However, it can also be kept in a box, e.g. hanging over a wall.
Ceratostigma plumbaginoides in your garden
Ceratostigma plumbaginoides, as this ground cover is popularly known, makes no special demands on the garden and soil. However, regular watering in the first year is essential to establish an extensive root system. Later, leadwort becomes a drought-tolerant garden resident. When the year is coming to an end and Ceratostigma has shed its leaves, wait until spring before pruning. The fallen foliage helps the plumbago to survive the winter better. In spring it is also advisable to spread a thick mulch layer of garden compost over the plants to give them strength for growth. You will then be rewarded with a rich flowering and dense carpet in summer. A purple-flowered autumn flower in the garden as an autumn planting brightens up the view.
