Mazus reptans - an attractive ground cover
Mazus is an attractive, low-growing and spreading perennial ground cover from the Himalayas. Lipped mulches are perfect for use between stepping stones in paths or for a carpet-like ground cover where the soil remains constantly moist to wet. The plant grows to about 5 centimetres high and spreads via creeping stems. The oval-shaped, light green leaves form an attractive, dense carpet that is covered with a multitude of the most beautiful flowers in late spring to early summer.

The small purple flowers of the Mazus reptans are really beautiful, such flowers are not often found. The tube-shaped, violet-blue flowers with 2 lips have a white field with rows of orange spots. Pond plants, such as Mazus reptans, are placed in normal garden soil around the pond. The soil here is dry but also contains moisture. This soil can occasionally be flooded by a good shower, but this is not a problem for the riparian plants. The riparian plants are usually used as ornamental plants for the edge of the pond.

Mazus reptans does best in shade, but will tolerate full sun provided it has sufficient moisture. In a mild winter the leaves remain on the plant.
