Yucca filamentosa spreads holiday mood in the garden.
As a decorative and undemanding plant, yucca ranks high on the popularity scale of all houseplants. Because this yucca palm is not hardy, it has to spend the cold months indoors. Fortunately, there is the Fädige Palmlilie, also called Garden Yucca, which can stay outside all year round über. The term palm lily is a little deceptive, because it is not a palm tree. The plants with the attractive leaves are agave plants and, from a botanical point of view, belong to the asparagus family.
Appearance of Yucca filamentosa
Yucca for the garden, in contrast to the indoor plants, does not form a woody stem. The evergreen, sessile foliage, arranged in a rosette, grows directly from the fleshy rhizome. Approximately 3cm wide and 60cm long, blue-green leaves taper to a point. Smooth and only rarely toothed leaves have some fibrillar properties.
Yucca palm hardy
Of the 50 or so species of palm lilies that exist worldwide, only a few can tolerate freezing temperatures. Year-round outdoor cultivation requires sufficient resistance to cold. The Fädige Yucca palm is winter-hardy and scores with a frost tolerance of up to -25° C.
Yucca palm flowers
From June to August, the yucca palm unfolds its full potential. The foliage often sprouts upright, panicle-like flowers that are more than a man's height. Numerous creamy white flowers hang from them. Flowers up to 10cm tall give off a jasmine-like fragrance. After the winter, it is relatively easy to pull out the leaves of the yucca palm when they have become dull.
Life zones of the palm lily
The natural range of Yucca filamentosa extends across the arid east coast of the USA. Lean and permeable soils with sand or gravel are therefore also preferred here. Waterlogging, on the other hand, causes problems and causes the roots to rot. During periods without rain, the yucca palm does not get into trouble, because its rhizome serves as a water reservoir. Give these lovely yucca perennials a sunny spot, possibly in front of a wall that reflects the radiant heat.
Using yucca in the garden
During the summer, the bee-friendly palm lily attracts all eyes. The yucca palm is best used as a solitary plant in prairies and rock gardens. If the space is sufficient, group plantings can be considered. Suitable neighbours with a distance of at least 50cm are plants that have similar requirements to their environment, such as Prächtige Fetthenne Brillant and Sharp Wall Pepper Otherwise, the exotic plant will feel at home in a solitary position in a spacious garden.
