Phlox subulata Candy Stripes / Teppichphlox Flammenblume weiß;-rosa
Carpet Phlox Candy Stripes is a rock garden plant that forms beautiful cushions and covers the ground like a carpet.
The numerous flowers of the ground cover phlox already show their dress in spring and shine in white and pink colours. The cushion phlox Candy Stripes can be used in many ways, for example around steps or slabs, but also as a border or in wall joints. Alternatively, the Phlox Subulata Candy Stripes can also be planted in a trough or a box, where it can also unfold its sea of flowers wonderfully.
The right soil for carpet phlox
The Candy Stripes phlox needs a well-drained, fresh soil that is rich in nutrients and can also be mineral or sandy. The best location is in a sunny area so that the flowers can develop sufficiently. Acidic or calcareous soil should be avoided, as the flame flower does not tolerate it very well. To give the roots a perfect hold, a topsoil thickness of about 20 centimetres is recommended. Care should be taken to ensure that no waterlogging forms on the phlox so as not to endanger growth.
The bright flowers of the Phlox Candy Stripes
The flowers are bright lilac, crimson, lavender blue, pink, white or purple, depending on which phlox cultivar is chosen. A very striking feature of the flowers is the so-called eye, which is located directly in the centre. With a size of 2.5 centimetres and a sturdy growth habit, they are loved by bees. A wonderful contrast to the colourful flowers are the winter-green leaves of the flame flower, which have a needle-like appearance. They form the crusty carpet on which the numerous flowers can spread.
The growth of the demanding cushion phlox
The rock garden plant Phlox Candy Stripes is absolutely undemanding. It forms a carpet-like cushion that creeps across the ground. The phlox ground cover only grows five to 15 centimetres high, but this is quite enough to make it stand out. In combination with white lavender or isotoma, it creates a wonderful picture that makes the garden glow.
The right way to plant Phlox Subulata
To allow the phlox to spread extensively, it is advisable to plant no more than 12 plants per square metre. If the cushion phlox is to be placed between other plants, keep a distance of about 20 centimetres. While many plants can be planted in autumn, the flame flower is planted in spring. Special fertilisation is not necessary as the phlox is very easy to care for. In winter it is advisable to cover the phlox with brushwood to protect it from the winter sun.
