Skimmia Japonica
Yes, it's winter, but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy a colourful garden or patio! There are many plants that show their best side when it gets cold. Japanese flowering cimmia is definitely one of them. This shrub, officially known as Skimmia japonica, always shows itself in a new way throughout the year.
What are Skimmia plants suitable for?
Skimmia japonica is a hardy evergreen dwarf shrub that rarely grows taller than 80cm. The foliage is dark green and leathery. In spring, white pink flowers form. In autumn red flower buds appear, which together with the red leaf stalks and the glistening dark green foliage look very attractive throughout autumn and winter. In November the plant shows the buds of its crisp, beautiful panicles. The colour and the buds remain beautiful throughout the winter. In April-May the buds open and the flowering cimmia blooms with white; pink flowers that have a strong fragrance: Bees love them. At the end of August, the first new buds appear amidst the leathery foliage, which remains beautifully green all year round.
Skimmia Japonica in the garden
The skimmia needs a well-drained, somewhat acidic garden soil. Use plenty of garden peat when planting this garden plant to maintain the acidic soil environment. The location should be shady or semi-shady, too much sunlight will cause faded foliage. The skimmia does not grow as a shrub and can be used as a hedge, planted in areas or as a solitary plant. Because of these red flower nodes, this beautiful garden plant will also decorate your garden in winter. The flower buds are also often used as cut flowers in winter at Christmas time.
