Gorgeous, easy to care for, insect-friendly: lavender as an ideal garden plant
Originally, lavender is native to the western Mediterranean region. It is best known for its large, extensive lavender fields, for example in Provence in the south of France. In this country, the plant is mainly found in gardens and as a pot plant on terraces and balconies. Lavender plants do not occur in the wild in our latitudes. If you buy low, bushy lavender plants that are primarily intended as ground covers, they can reach a height of up to 30 cm.
Use as a garden plant
More and more people want to buy lavender plants for their garden or balcony. The semi-shrub with its numerous purple flowers not only looks magnificent, but also smells very pleasant and intense thanks to its ätheric Öle. The scent has a calming and stress-reducing effect. The flowers of lavender plants are also an important source of food for insects such as bees, bumblebees and butterflies.
Tips for care
The magnificent ground covers are easy to care for, fertilising and frequent watering are not necessary. Only once a year should the soil be enriched with a little lime. The lavender plants prefer a sunny, wind-protected spot, for example against a house wall. The heat from the sun is reflected there. In addition, lavender plants need a soil that is rather poor in nutrients and permeable, for example a rock garden or a gravel bed.
Is my lavender plant hardy?
True lavender (lavendula angustifolia) is hardy. This means that you can enjoy this plant for longer than one year. To keep your lavender in good condition, it is important to prune it regularly. Ideally, you should prune it twice a year, a big cut in spring and a smaller one in autumn.
