Dazzling appearance of the tulip magnolia in spring
When the tulip magnolia blooms from April to May, the garden is transformed into a feast for the senses. Countless large, white and pink calyxes stand upright on the branches. At their base they are intensely purple, while the upper edge is pure white. In between the colours flow gently into each other. The shape of the flowers is actually reminiscent of tulips. The entire wood presents itself from the trunk height as an overwhelming sea of flowers. No one can resist this feast for the eyes. But it's not just the sight that delights, the flowering tulip magnolia also exudes a sweet, flowery fragrance. The aroma of the flowering tulip magnolia envelops the surroundings in a wonderful fragrance. The aroma of the tulip magnolia is said to have a calming effect. In China, the spices are symbols of purity and beauty.
Tulip Magnolia Tree
The broad, compact tulip magnolia, which grows up to 7 m tall, bears the scientific name Magnolia x soulangiana. It is a cross between the Yulan magnolia and the purple magnolia. Both species originated in East Asia. After flowering, ovate, short-pointed, up to 11 cm long leaves with a smooth edge and a dull green colour sprout. The brown-grey bark with a flat surface changes over the years to a finely fissured bark. Sometimes the tulip magnolia grows as a shrub with several thin stems. Often a welcome afterflower appears in September.
Favourable site conditions
Slightly acidic to pH-neutral garden soil forms the perfect basis for Magnolia x soulangiana. For optimum nutrient supply, the plant should ideally receive a layer of compost in spring. The fertiliser should be worked into the soil only slightly so that the shallow roots are not damaged. The summer-green ornamental shrub prefers sunny and semi-shady positions. Buying pre-cultivated tulip magnolia in pots allows it to be planted all year round.
Dignified places for the tulip magnolia
The stately appearance only allows for a solitary position. On an appropriate surface, the stems and branches unfold in a tree-like manner. Pruning is not a problem for the tulip magnolia. However, they prevent a harmonious crown structure with overhanging growth. Shortening the branches leads to increased branching, which disrupts the overall appearance. The tulip magnolia is most effective in small gardens and parks. In the Japanese garden, it complements the faraway ambience. To prevent the area below the tulip magnolia from appearing bare, it is a good idea to plant it underneath, so that it is gentle and tolerates shade. Suitable plants include evergreens, foam flowers, grape lilies and ivy, all plants that do not have deep roots and do not compete with the tulip magnolia.
