Big, flowering Irish ivy for pure romance in the garden
Common ivy is an evergreen climber that has long had its place in gardening culture as a border for walls and facades. Large-leaved Irish ivy is a subspecies that was first discovered in Ireland at the beginning of the 19th century and has since made its triumphant advance in European gardens. Large-leaved Irish ivy is characterised in particular by its enormous vigour and its dense evergreen foliage in a wonderful dark green colour.
Vigorous and long-lived climber
In its natural habitat, the common ivy grows in mixed deciduous forests and floodplains, but also on rocks. Like all ivy plants, the large-leaved Irish ivy is characterised by its enormous vigour.
Common ivy can create large facades in just a few years. Large-leaved Irish ivy can grow up to 50 cm a year, reaching a length of 4 to 6 m. A screen of ivy or a border of house walls with ivy is very durable. Large-leaved Irish ivy can live for up to 500 years and over time can grow into enormous trunks.
Ivy as a privacy screen and for a quick border
The evergreen and dense foliage consists of three to five-lobed large, dark green, leathery leaves, making ivy simply ideal as a screen. The umbel-like greenish-yellow flowers appear in late summer and into autumn, after which the small spherical blue-black berries, which are not suitable for eating, appear.
The long-lived ivy plants can be used more effectively than almost any other plant for landscaping large areas. Thanks to the evergreen large leaves, ivy is attractive as a screen all year round.
Big-leaved Irish ivy has adhesive roots that allow the plant to anchor itself to the ground and climb up independently. The adhesive roots of the ivy can hold on to almost any surface, so that ivy can be used almost anywhere as a screen or as a border. But common ivy can also be used as a ground cover plant.
Uncomplicated and easy to prune ivy
Our ivy is the only evergreen climbing plant native to Central Europe. Large-leaved Irish ivy thrives well in normal garden soil and grows equally well in sunny, semi-shady or shady areas.
After the first planting, ivy needs a little time to develop its full vigour. You should bear this in mind when planning a privacy screen made of ivy. After one year, however, the plants will develop their full vigour and the ivy privacy screen will quickly become dense.
