The yellow flowering magnolia is a very chic eye-catcher in the garden.
Magnolia brooklynensis 'Yellow Bird' may not be the best known of the magnolias, but it is a popular ornamental shrub with a showy floral display. In spring, this magnolia blossoms on its bare, dark brown branches. Then beautiful, strikingly large, tulip-shaped flowers with a bright yellow colour appear. It is possible for this magnolia to produce a second flower in the summer months. During or after the flowering period, this magnolia develops dark green leaves
Where does the magnolia come from?
This garden beauty originated in 1967 at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, New York, USA, from a cross between M. x brooklynensis ‘Evamaria’ and M. acuminata, but was not named until 1981. Beautiful, tree-shaped and yellow-flowered magnolia. It has a long flowering phase and at the same time is very hardy. The Yellow Bird grows upright, pyramidal and finally reaches a height and width of about 3 to 4 metres. Magnolia Brooklynensis Yellow Bird is also called Scented Magnolia because of its up to 10 cm large, cup-shaped and gently fragrant flowers. Around April, when the foliage emerges, the striking flowers of the Yellow Bird also appear at the same time.
A few hours of sunshine for this magnolia
The strikingly beautiful Yellow Bird tulip tree exudes a certain dignified calm at any time of year. Especially when its picturesque, tulip-like and yellow calyxes open in April. With a height of 3 to 4 metres, this sometimes multi-stemmed ornamental shrub or tree is ideal as a specimen in a medium-sized garden. Magnolia brooklynensis 'Yellow Bird' is very hardy. For abundant flowering, it is important that the magnolia gets at least a few hours of sun a day and is planted in a humus-rich soil.
What grows under the tulip tree
