The Japanese holly Ilex crenata is causing a sensation
Up to 600 species are classified in the holly genus. They differ mainly in the shape of their leaves. Ilex crenata, as the Japanese holly is called in botanical nomenclature, has a compact and broad-bushy growth habit. It is therefore often used as an evergreen screen. Sometimes it is referred to as the Japan holly or the holly lily. The shrub owes the latter name to its loose, leathery leaves that turn upwards at the sides. The name Hülse was derived from Hulstbäumen. Our Germanic ancestors used this term for stinging haws. This characteristic does not apply to the species from Japan, because the leaves do not have sharp tips.

Ilex crenata thrives on normal, well-drained garden soil, is frost-hardy and resistant to environmental influences. The Japanese holly even tolerates the city climate excellently. White, inconspicuous flowers appear from May to June. The site can be either sunny or shady.

The leaves are similar to those of Buxus. Ilex is not susceptible to fungal diseases and is devastated by the dreaded borer. In this respect, Japanese holly is the better choice compared to boxwoods.

From spheres to cuboids, pyramids, cones and columns, all contours can be realised. With a little skill, even large sculptures for the garden can be created. Scissors with sharp blades that cut precisely are essential. Templates make shaping easier. In its native regions of Japan, Ilex crenata is mainly used in landscaping and in the tea gardens typical of the country. Even as a garden bonsai, the shrub leaves nothing to be desired. In general, two prunings per year are recommended for a closed leaf pattern. Ideally on cloudy days so that the foliage is not burnt by the sun.
