Chinese Wonder with changing colour
Fargesia jiushaigou is the chamäleon among plants. The colour of its culms changes depending on the age of the culms and how much sunlight it gets. First the stems are green, then orange, then red when they are 3 years old. In strong sun to partial shade, and if the soil is rich in nutrients, the culms turn bright red, in the shade more purple. If the umbrella bamboo is in deep shade, there is almost no special colouring to be seen. It tolerates pruning well, sheds a third of its leaves in autumn and likes moist soil outdoors.
No root barrier necessary!
If you want to plant a bamboo, the good news is that the red-stemmed umbrella bamboo does not need any root or rhizome barrier, like all Fargesia species in the bamboo garden. This is because it does not form runners, new shoots sprout directly from the base root. When planting bamboo in a pot, please note that it needs a 60-80 litre plant pot with drainage holes, in which clay shards and stones are placed at the bottom; please repot every three years and give a little fertiliser almost every month, in the open air full fertiliser is sufficient twice a year (April and June). Fargesia jiushaigou is a shallow rooter, its roots spread under the soil surface up to 1 metre in diameter.
