Epimedium frohnleiten, with its foliage and striking yellow flowers, is one of the most beautiful elfflower varieties. These perennials are an enrichment for your shade garden. The evergreen plants look great all year round. Especially from April to May they attract attention with their abundance of flowers. The delicate flowers of Epimedium stand on thin stems above the foliage. Its graceful form earned it the name elf. The foliage leaves are also very attractive. They are long pointed to heart-shaped and remain standing even in winter. The green leaves are leathery. This filigree ground cover is a typical forest plant. It occurs in the wild in the northern hemisphere and grows in sparse forests and in shady places.
Epimedium is a flower wonder of a special kind
The delicate flowers have four inner and four outer petals. The outer ones are formed as open spurs, which gives the elfflowers an orchid-like appearance and an incomparable charm. Epimedium is versatile and hardy.
Epimediums are vigorous and uncomplicated. They reach a height of between 20 and 35 centimetres and a width of up to 30 centimetres. The garden ivy flower forms dense stands relatively quickly. It also develops in difficult garden areas and even holds its own under greenery with stronger root pressure. The Epimedium ground cover is versatile. Epimedium is also suitable for edging beds or paths and looks beautiful in a planter. When you buy an epimedium, you can further enhance its radiance with the right companion plants. Great planting partners are Caucasian forget-me-nots, ferns or sedges. A great combination is snowdrops and other spring flowers. When these have faded, the elfflower will cause a stir with its fresh leaf shoots and magical flowers.

Epimedium thrives best in a well-drained and humus-rich soil. The epimedium grows in clumps and can also cope well with partial shade. Elfflowers are best planted in groups. There are eight to twelve plants per square metre. The epimediums are hardy. It is advisable to remove the old leaves in early spring so that the plant can sprout again. If you buy an epimedium, you will be able to enjoy it all year round.
