Clematis 'The President' - Wood Vine

Clematis the President' is a well-known old variety from 1876. With its large purple/blue flowers, this woodland vine 'The President' is a real eye-catcher in your garden and the president among clematis. It can be assumed that clematis were already very popular in ancient times. The Greeks called all types of climbing plants clematis, which means "tendril" and refers to the ability to climb. Due to its graceful and compact growth, this climbing plant is suitable for both large and small gardens.

Clematis in combination with other garden inhabitants

If you plant Clematis The President between an ivy hedge, you can turn the evergreen hedge into a colourful ensemble in summer. Throughout the summer, the beautiful large flowers of the clematis are shown off to their best advantage among the deep greenery. The Hedera provides sufficient support so that the clematis 'The President' does not need any further climbing help. To protect the roots of the clematis 'The President' from bright sunlight, it is advisable to plant a ground cover plant, such as Nepal cinquefoil 'Ron McBeath' or pungent wall pepper, around the clematis. In the wild, clematis often creep along the ground. If you want something different, you can also use your clematis as a ground cover. During the flowering season this is a wonderful sight!

Clematis in your garden

The clematis comes in a pot. Plant the clematis 10 cm lower than in the pot, because of the wilt disease that can mainly affect above-ground stems. Below ground, the plant remains healthy. That is why it is planted deep: it can always sprout again healthily. Clematis 'The President' likes fertile, well-drained soil and sufficient moisture (but not permanently wet soil). Fertilisation is best done in spring with organic climbing plant fertiliser. This ensures optimal growth in spring. Sufficient water during growth and flowering does the rest. Pruning is only necessary if a tangle of stems develops. You can cut the plants back after flowering if necessary, but it is not essential for growth and flowering the following year.
